Ink and graphite on paper, 2022
Series of collages made with paper and ink. Initially inspired by shapes from nature, and the way tree bark behaves when it bends, this is a playful take on paper. Combining formality with random shapes, the result is at once strict and open in its expression.
The wind was refreshing on hot afternoons, but annoying when it woke me up in the middle of the night: sheets of paper would fall to the ground and fly around in the air. The more it happened, the more I wanted to make use of it. One late night, unable to sleep, I suddenly knew what to do. I could not believe it had taken me so long to think of this simple idea: I attached a piece of charcoal to the curtain blowing in the wind, placed a piece of paper underneath, and observed with fascination the wind and the charcoal doing its work.
Looking at the wonder –a drawing slowly being created by natural force– was calming and meditative, and I could finally sleep in peace. Since then, I made several drawings with pens and pencils attached to strings. I sometimes move the paper, but never touch the pen or the pencil in the drawing process.
